It’s almost that time of the year where writers all across the planet decide to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That’s a minimum of 1666 words per day. This is my fifth year doing it and I’m itching to get going. Last year I ‘Won’ it by getting the 50,000 written and I’m hoping to match that this year.
It really doesn’t matter if I, or anyone hits the 50k though, what matters is taking part and giving it a go. It was on my fourth NaNo that I hit the 50k but the years before I still learnt a lot about myself as a writer. Things like how hard it is to write consistently each day, and how hard it is some days to just write that minimum 1666 words.
I’ve had the days where I couldn’t bare to write a word and other days where I’ve knocked out 6500 words. I’ve learnt how helpful it is talking to other writers and joining in on word sprints (thats where you write intensely for say 20 minutes and then take a break).
I’ve had the elation of passing the finishing line. It’s an odd sensation, part relief and part pure joy.
An unexpected gem that I’ve gained has been my local NaNoWriMo group. We are incredibly supportive of each other and are amazingly welcoming. We often have Write-Ins outside of NaNo and I’ve made some great friends from the group.
I’m really optimistic for NaNo this year, despite having no preparation for what I’m going to write, at all!
Good Luck everyone who is taking part, if you want to add me as a Buddy on there then just search for PeterJReaper.
This is going to be my first one! Just a little over 5hours away….I’m super nervous!
