No writing today, long shift at the day job. I’ve got another one tomorrow as well, so not a lot go writing this weekend.
I have had some amazing feedback on my story that is in the K is for Kidnap anthology from another one of the contributors which has made my day! I had a lot of anxiety about this story. I didn’t think it was good enough, which is a testament to the old saying ‘never judge your own work’. That feels so apt at the moment. I’ve got to get over my anxieties about my own work.
Right, I’m wiped out. So I’m going to finish this episode of Sex Education and then get my head down. After a little reading maybe.
I will pimp out my Buy Me A Coffee page quickly. If you like what you read here, or have read and enjoyed my fiction and would like to chip in for editing, cover art, website hosting fees. Then I will be very grateful. I understand times are tough, folks. I do. But anything I’m grateful for.
So, today was a good day. I finished up with 3724 words for the day, which puts me a little above where I need to be. So yeah, I’m back ahead but that doesn’t mean anything come tomorrow when I need to be hitting a good 2000 words again.
I also spoke to an editor I know and we’ve agreed a date for her to edit the novella I’m working on. And I’ve had an update from the gentleman who’s doing the cover for it, and seen it so far and I am stoked!
I’m working through till next Monday, with some long hours over the weekend, so I’m not counting on getting any words done then. I am off on Monday, but I’d like to be ahead of the game before then. So that means a solid few days writing between now and Saturday. I also have an appointment Wednesday night, which’ll be a couple of hours. That’ll also require a couple of hours of preparation tomorrow. So I’ve a lot to do, not including everyday stuff away from those things.
Can I do it? Yes, I bloody well can!
This is the final piece of my work that has been printed. My story ‘Dark’ in the ‘It came from the darkness‘ anthology was one I was invited to submit to and I was very proud to have been. It is a collection of drabbles and poetry from many big names and I was very humble when I saw who I was alongside in it and hoped my story didnt let the anthology down. Like many of my published pieces it is in an anthology that is raising money for charity, and I really don’t want to put up a piece which isn’t my best work. This got accepted, which tells me I did a good job (the publishers, Red Cape Publishing have published one of my stories and rejected another one. So I know they don’t take something they either don’t like or isn’t good enough). I can’t really say too much about the story, seeing as it’s a drabble which is a hundred word story, there’s not much I could say that wouldn’t spoil it.
Right, I’m off to bed. I hope everyone is doing well and keep cracking on, folks!
Today was a good day. I got some good sleep, first time in ten days or so. I wrote 1781 on NaNo and then 231 on a short story I wrote during NaNoWriMo 2019 for a total of 2012 for the day.
The short story I worked on in 2019 was one that I was done with. I’d not had any urge to edit it because I wasn’t happy with it and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. Then today when I wasn’t even thinking about writing and BANG!!! The solution hit me and I had to write some of it down. Not much, just those few hundred words to serve ad a reminder when I come back to it.
I am now on par for NaNo. The last two days have wiped out my banked words. I still don’t need to write 1667 a day, but I’m going to try to as I’d like to get some more words banked when I can.
I also did some rearranging in my office today, and am a lot happier with it. I just need to find somewhere for my bin to go and then most bits and pieces have a home.
I also prepped for an appointment and then had the Zoom appointment. It was after that that I got the words down.
I cracked on and worked. That is something I need to push myself harder and be more consistent. Arse in chair and work! Simple as that. When I can’t get my arse in the chair, write when I have time. I’ve got Apple devices that are all synchronised, so no reason why I can’t write at any opportunity I have.
Time to get my head where it needs to be. I definitely have more than enough time.
Elements of Horror Book Two: Air from Red Cape Publishing is the fourth book I’ve had a story published in. Walking was a story that had a few twists and turns in it but I’m very happy with how it ended up. I was skimming through it earlier as I looked for a detail and I found myself smiling as I looked through. I’m not at the stage where I’ve discovered who I am as a writer, or what my style is. Sometimes I think I’m not quite self-aware enough to know that yet. Or I’ve not read enough of the genre I’m working in. Whatever the reason is, I’ve not found who I am as a writer yet. Each thing I write is more often then not coming from the gut, especially short fiction, I think Walking is a prime example of that. So, please hit the link and check it out.
I’ve had a strange couple of days. I’ve not had work today and yesterday but had an urgent matter to see to yesterday that was unexpected but that took up the morning. Then in the afternoon I prepped for a weekly appointment. I’ve been trying to do this the right way, which means its a couple of hours at the least I dedicate to it, and I think it’s really beginning to pay off. And yes, I’m going to be vague about it.
So after all that, I was a bit beat. So I didn’t write yesterday. The day before I didn’t write much either because I fell asleep. I did have a productive meeting via Discord with fella ML’s from the Kent region for NaNoWriMo. It was a lot of fun and I’ve not laughed that hard in a very long time. We did also get some bits and pieces sorted out for this years NaNoWriMo as well. It’s going to be a strange one as we won’t be having any write-ins at all. NaNo HQ have said that there will be none, so there will be none. It’s just not worth the risk, and I fully agree. If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time then you’ll know how much I love going to write-ins. I think they are one a great way of being reminded that even though writing is a solitary act, for the most of it, we’re not the only ones doing it. But, we don’t have them this year so we’re working on ways to make it a memorable year for people while doing it all virtually.
In other news from my little corner of the world, the paperback for Corona-Nation St is now out! I have my copy and I’m super happy with it. I’d given up on this story until after I’d moved back to my parents and started to get myself sorted. Matthew Cash, the ruler of Burdizzo Books, posted a reminder about the submission call and it spurred me to revisit my piece. I had a complete story but it just didn’t feel right. So I looked at it, and ended up rewriting the ending, which changed the entire tone of the story. I hope it works. I feel much happier with the story as it is now. I did bleed into the story, but that’s why I think it works. Although I didn’t literally do what the character does I channeled some of my feelings and emotions into it.
The pre-order for It Came From The Darkness is also available now! Like Corona-Nation St, this is a charity anthology full of flash fiction. This was an invite only and I am so proud to have been invited to it.
So, please check both of these out.
I’ve got an errand to run today before Stefan from Stefan’s Daily Gaming comes over for a few hours to game. If you haven’t checked out his stuff, please do! He’s a great guy and a very dear friend.
So I’ve got a couple of hours this afternoon to write. So I am going to try and make the most of that time.
Good evening folks! I’ve just knocked out a quick 341 words on the rewrite of the fan fiction piece I’ve been messing about with over the last few years.
This was very much just playing. I’ll never publish this anywhere, it’s just for fun and a way to learn more about writing. I’m also not going to work on it over any of my own work. I don’t have story I can just work on for twenty minutes and that’s it. Everything I’ve got ongoing is in the editing process now. So, I had okay time.
If you didn’t see my post earlier, I’ve been accepted into a new anthology. You can find the details here.
Essentially I had a chill out after work today. I feel like I needed it and will try and get cracking again tomorrow.
Good evening folks! I have good news. I’ve had a story accepted for a charity anthology of drabbles (100 word stories).
Here is the blurb:
It Came From the Darkness is a unique collection of drabbles (stories of 100 words exactly) and artwork, compiled by Red Cape Publishing and Philip Rogers 101 PR in aid of the Max the Brave Fund. A huge number of horror writers, poets, artists, and film makers have come together to support the cause and offer the reader something special. Each piece of writing begins with the same five words, but the stories themselves are all wonderfully varied. So dig in, take each tale one bloody bite at a time, and beware of what comes from the darkness.
Includes stories from David Owain Hughes, Matthew V. Brockmeyer, Tim Lebbon, Lou Yardley, Cortney Palm, Lee Franklin, MJ Dixon, Singh Lall, and many, many more.
I was very honoured and incredibly flattered to have been invited to submit to this one, and even more so when I got accepted. The Max The Brave Fund is very worthy and I hope we make a nice amount of money for them.
The pre-order should be up on the 23rd of October, with a release scheduled for the 30th of October. So please keep an eye out for it, but if you miss it I will be posting about it here. Also, follow the hashtag #ItCameFromTheDarkness on social media to keep up to date as well.
Good evening, Folks. I have had a day where I’ve not done much writing. Which I’m feeling shite about. I had time to get more done than I did, but I chilled out. I wrote 338 words on a short story, but that was it. I wanted to get nearing a 1000 words, despite not having a lot of time, but I just crashed out.
I ran errands this morning, including getting a couple of bookcases for my office, and then gave my parents car a quick once over (I gave mine an even quicker wash, I really need to get some bits and pieces and give it a damn good once over). I haven’t put the bookcases up. Partly because I’ve pulled something in my elbow and need to save it for work over the next couple of days, and I crashed out because I’m beat. I’ve been working my backside off over the last few weeks and I’m feeling it. I’m really enjoying my job, and the last few weeks have been a lot of fun there but I need some down time. One of the aspects of my job that I love is it being shift work. So I’m getting a nice chunk of time even when I am at work to get some words done.
Next week I’ve got to dive into something non-writing related. Something that I can’t go into here, but it’s the most important part of my life and it’s time for me to dive in and get rolling.
I will make time to get the spaces clear for the bookcases, and get them built. Then I’ve got to get the books onto the shelves, which I’m going to do properly……….
But I will be getting words written and edited. I’m feeling goof about this short story I’m working on, I think it’s going to be a nice piece once it’s done.
I do need to get back on track, I know this. The next week will be one where I’m getting back on track. I’ll have the time, I’ve got the work to do. I’m going to write a to-do list and try and do my best to start ticking the bits off it. I’m gonna do the list just after I’ve put this post up.
I’m going to end this post with giving a mention for the Elements Of Horror series from Red Cape Publishing. Four books in the series, I’ve got a story in book two: Air. All three books deserve checking out though. I’ve listened to the first three and am currently on book four: Water, and I’ve got to say these stories in these four books are damn good. I know I’m biased, I’m in one. So I get it, but I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it. Please check them out, they’re all out in audio as well as ebook and paperback.
Good morning folks. A later start to the writing day for me this week. I’m going to be interspersing writing with general tidying up. I’ve got a lot going on in the next few weeks and squeezing writing into that is going to be a fun challenge, especially seeing as NaNoWriMo is right around the corner.
I did get my contributor copy of Elements Of Horror:Air this week. It came out on Tuesday and I loved writing this story. It was one of those stories that kind of wrote itself when I knew how the story was going to end. This is book two of four, each one focused on an element. The book is from Red Cape Publishing and the contributors are: Jaq D. Hawkins, Daren Callow, Dale Parnell, Theresa Jacobs, Peter Germany, P.J. Blakey-Novis, Nils Visser & Jovannah Bär, Ann Fox, R.C. Rumple.
I did listen to Highway To Hell by Armand Rosamilia, which is the first book in his Dying Days series. I loved this book. I felt for the protagonist, he spoke to me a lot. I saw myself in him a lot. There’s some damn good gore in it, the characters are fantastic (I was particularly fond of a character who owned a car sales). Highway to Hell is a damn fun zombie story with depth along with the vile zombies and the humans who deserve to be zombies.
That’s it for now. I’m going to get some writing down, and some tidying around it.
Good evening folks. It feels like it’s been a busy week, and in some ways it has. The day job is always busy but with writing I don’t feel like I’ve really got my teeth stuck in at all. Part of that is I feel like I’ve ran dry on the couple of short stories I’ve been working on. One I feel could be something a little bigger, while the other just died out after a couple of hundred words. So I’ve gone into editing mode again and have started on the CS1 edit. I’m planning on rewriting a lot of the ending and adding a lot more detail in the early stages that’ll make things later on work better. As I was writing it sub-plots came about that have no base in the early stages of the story. There’s also a few elements which I let drop accidentally as the story moved forward. So I’m going to pick those up as I go. I’m glad I’ve left this story for a while as I feel like I’ve got a better handle on it now I’ve let it simmer.
I’ll end up by sharing the link for my next story release. I have a story in the upcoming Elements of Horror: Air: Book Two. (Click the link for the pre-order). It’s released on the 1st of October. This story was one of those that came very easily and I knew where I was going with from quite an early part of the writing process. This is book two of four of a series from Red Cape Publishing. There’s a few more details here.
That’s it for tonight. I’m wiped out and my bed is calling.
