So I spent an hour with my co-writer Owen on the novel re-write and we talked through A lot and broke some good ground I do believe. Before I went into it I thought that we would have it all done in the one sitting, but we’re not even close. We talked through much of the key plot points and some of the major character alterations. We also decided to write it in third person. This is something that we have never discussed and I am glad we have now because most of my short fiction is written in first person but with this novel I believe that it would be impossible to write it in first person. This novel will have five or six main characters that the reader will follow.
We did not go into how many chapters we will have because I am not really a planner. We’re aiming for about the eighty to ninety thousand word mark but until I start actually writing I will not know because I just write so it may turn out closer to a hundred thousand or it may be lower. Time will tell on that aspect of the novel.
We have not really decided on which characters that we will follow. We have the main two and maybe two others that I believe we cannot write the story with out them playing a key part but that leaves us with two others which we could let drop but I am tempted to let A couple of characters evolve into the story and maybe make themselves vital.
A little note on distractions though. We did all this in a coffee-house in Maidstone. Now if we were at mine or Owen’s house then I can guarantee that we would have not got even close to clearing as much as we did, because we did not have access to a Xbox, Futurama DVD’s and alcohol. We do get side tracked very easily but this worked really well. We have never sat down and written together. Our working relationship is that i do the bulk of it and then we play with it once Owen’s read through. I keep him well up to date with how it is going but I don’t think I could write with him in the same town let alone the same room. Even on a collaboration I still find it very hard to write with someone else in the room.
Next stage is to look into some more of the details and building of the world that the novel is set in.
