Good Morning, 18th March, 2021

Howdy, folks! I had a mixed nights sleep. I woke up a couple of times but overall I think it was okay. I don’t feel knackered like I do some mornings.

I finished work a lot earlier than I was expecting to yesterday, which was lucky as I had an important phone call I needed to take. I didn’t do any writing after that but I did watch the movie Night Watch, and damn that was good. (please check it out). Something I’ve been noticing lately is Hollywood films aren’t doing it for me anymore, especially horror. When you look at the more mainstream ones like IT (which I did enjoy), they’re good but not really horror. They’re a commercialised horror designed to appeal to as many people as possible to pull people into the cinemas and spend their money. A lot of people don’t want to have real horror hitting them, and if you’re not a horror person I respect that. If a friend who wasn’t a horror fan watched IT and said they loved it and wanted to watch more horror I wouldn’t immediately recommend The Ritual, VVitch, (both movies I love but each one freaked me out), or Saw. If someone likes a commercialised horror enough to start exploring the rest of the genre then recommending the harder stuff (and yes, I know the films I’ve just mentioned are tame compared to some horror out there), probably isn’t the best of ideas.

Right, I’m digressing too much. Back to word wrangling. Today I’m going to work on Ashes, there’s just a few edits to do on it, and then see if my beta readers are available to have a little look at it. After that I’m going to get back into Black Blood and get the next episode of the vampire book prepped.

And yes, I still haven’t tidied my desk yet!

I have two phone appointments today, one of which will be a longer call. That one I know will be at midday but the other one will come whenever it comes.

I’m setting myself a lot to do today, but I’m feeling fired up and I’m looking forward to reporting back a productive day.

Good Morning, 17th March 2021 (2)

That is 695 words written this morning, and one character killed off!

It was a pretty straight forward session this morning. I managed to get rolling quite well, despite kitty interference, and the next scene my characters will really get thrown in at the deep end.

I’d like to be able to channel some of the bleakness I put into a story late last year, but where I’ve got through that part of my life I don’t seem to be able to draw from it at the moment. Obviously I don’t want to return to living with the sense of desolation I had back then, I work each day to prevent that. But I wrote some good pieces then and I think this story would work well with some of that vibe added to it. That said though, would it work for this story? This story has never had that depth of emotion to it, so it may screw up the vibe it has now.

But anyway! I’m at work and will be starting shortly. I always have a productive day at my day job when I’ve been able to get some words wrangled beforehand.

Good Morning, 17th of March 2021

Howdy, folks! How are we all doing this morning?

I have work in a couple of hours so want to get on with some writing. I slept badly so I’m feeling wiped out already, but I’ll be okay once I get up and running and I’ve got tomorrow off, so it’s not too bad.

Time is something I don’t have a lot of here so this is gonna be a short post. If I can hit 500 words today, I’m a happy word wrangler!

The Gaunt’s Ghosts books are being made into audiobooks and this is the first. Arguably my favourite book series that I’ve been wanting to reread for some time 🙂

Good Evening, 16th March 2021

Howdy, folks. I wrote 539 this morning before taking a call. After that I got a little sidetracked when I parcel arrived. Then I chilled out.

I’ve not done a lot of writing the last few days as I’ve had more important matters to see to, as well as something that I think is going to be good for my soul. But, I’ll be getting back on track over the nexts couple of days.

My desktop was actually working for a few hours this morning ☺️

Good Afternoon 11th March 2021 & Filling The Well

Good afternoon, folks. Yes, I overslept till gone ten and then had personal correspondence to write. But now I am ready to work!

First up is a read through of Ashes with a red pen and then I’m going to dive into the Vampire book and get this episode done! Then I’ll paste the next episode into the drafting file and read through it so I’m going through as blindly as I did the last chapter.

I also want to get cracking on the ending to Black Blood, and figure out exactly how I want it to end. I’ve got ideas but I think those could change as I write. But we’ll see.

My desk is Still messy!

I did get some good ideas from the Netflix series, Pacific Rim: The Black. Overall it was a good seven episodes and I’m looking forward to see what they do in the future with it, but from a creative point of view it gave me some good ideas, which leads me on to talking about keeping the creative well filled up.

One of the things I do is rewatch what I’ve seen many times before. Sometimes it’s a comfort thing, other times its laziness. Sometimes I’ll watch something new like Superstore, which is good but doesn’t add much to my creative well. That needs filling to keep the ideas growing. I think when we’re young it gets a lot of ideas thrown into it, and it gets more filled the longer we don’t start pulling from it. I watched Pacific Rim: The Black yesterday and it gave me a ton of ideas, then I watched a movie called Surrounded about a group of YouTube type content adventurers whose seaplane crashes and leaves them in shark “infested” waters. (There’s only three sharks) and they have to survive being adrift and getting to this small island station thingy. Firstly, I don’t know why I watched this as anything with Big Water freaks me out! I hate the thought of being stranded in the middle of a huge late, or ocean, sea. Anything like that, which is probably why I like watching that stuff, but anyway. It was something new that I hadn’t seen before and aside from a number of eye rolling moments (I doubt sharks swim in an attack formation, or dead straight; and there was a few cliche moments and plot details there just to add conflict), it wasn’t too bad. I can always live with cheaper CGI if the story and actors grab me, and for the most part they did. I didn’t get a huge amount of inspiration from it, but it was enjoyable.

I need to watch more new content. I retreat onto what I know far too often and I need to change that. I’m not going to make a grand declaration that I’m only going to watch new things for the rest of the year because that’s crap! But What I am going to do is make more effort to watch new, or thing I’ve not seen in a long time or only once from here on out. I’ll talk more about them here as well, even if it’s just a passing mention.

I also have series to continue with as well. The Last Kingdom, The Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Jack Ryan, Altered Carbon, Game of Thrones, and no doubt a few more. I want to rewatch a couple as well. In particular Sense8 and Battlestar Galactica (the reboot). I’ve not sat down and watched Battlestar from start to finish in one go and feel it’s nearing time to do so. As for Sense8, it is my belief that Sense8 is the best TV show of the last thirty years. It’s years ahead of its time, and doesn’t hold back in so many areas and would never have been made if it wasn’t on somewhere like Netflix. It’s so ahead of its time in my opinion that it suffered for it and was cancelled after only two seasons, but due to fan demand Netflix gave them a two hour special to wrap the loose ends up. It’s not a series for the faint hearted, but I think it’s very much worth a watch.

Right, I’m off to get to work! Have a fun day, folks!

Good Evening, 9th of March 2021

Hey folks!

Today didn’t quite go as planned. I got a bit distracted by cleaning up our driveway (and messy!), so I only wrote 250 words today. I also cut 2500+ from this chapter of the vampire book. In this story I had to change a lot of character motivations and bring it in line more with how I want the story to go now. I also know how I’m going to end this particular episode.

A wee bit muddy!

I have got an early start tomorrow, then Thursday off. I’ve got some personal things to look at on Thursday but will also be getting this episode of the vampire book done, and then maybe onto the next one. I’ve also got to do a read through of a story for a publisher, that I’m calling Ashes at the moment but that’s going to change.

I hope everyone is having a decent day, and I’ll speak again soon!

I’d already washed my car once when I got sidetracked by cleaning the driveway (to be fair, the car needed two washes anyway!)

Good Evening, 7th March 2021

Howdy folks! When I was in bed last night, not being able to sleep, I gave up trying and started writing and ended up writing 473 on a new story set in the Penal Earth universe. I haven’t read it since I wrote it, so it could suck! but who cares! everything can be fixed in edits!

I took time during my break to make some notes on the mermaid story, and it feels like I’m getting some good world building down. This story is beginning to fill out nicely, although its just occurred to me that I’ve not done too much on characters yet.

Anyway, after work I did a little work on the vampire book and added 182 words on that one while also carrying out edits. Not much, but I worked through a fair bit of what is a difficult scene.

Right, I’ve got an early start tomorrow. So I’m going to bed! Have a good one, folks!

2nd of March 2021

Hey folks!

596 today on the vampire book, but I also deleted 2466 words today. Before I deleted those words the overall word count was 48,800 words. At this rate I think this book will end up about 70,000 words. There’s a lot of story to go, but I can see the ending in sight.

I’ve got another late shift tomorrow, and where I’ve left this story today I will be getting stuck into a chunk where we discover a lot and there’s some good friction to it as well. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into that tomorrow! I’m hoping it’ll flow like the scenes I wrote yesterday. What I did today was more connecting the last scene and the next one together. It’s not a bridging scene as it opens up the next section of the story, it’s a small but key part of the mystery of a couple of characters deaths. But the next scene will be, hopefully, page turning!

Right, time to grab something to eat and then get ready for work! Rock on folks!

Goofing around 🤪

Good Morning, 2nd of March 2021

Howdy folks, I’m not feeling groggy this morning. I also didn’t have to drag myself out of bed kicking and screaming either.

I’ve spent the last hour or so on a personal matter and will be word wrangling until it’s time to get ready for work.

I should be doing some of the work for Black Blood this morning, but I feel like I’m rolling with the vampire stories so I’m going to continue on that. I haven’t written down my goals for the month on my white board but I think finishing that draft is going to be near the top of the list.

I have just realised I’ve missed a deadline for a short story submission though, I’ll go online and double check in a minute. It’s not the end of the world if I have missed it, I may find somewhere else for the story or put it in my own collection at some point.

Desk needs tidying, it’s beginning to annoy me

Doing afternoon/evening shifts is something I’m enjoying, partly because I feel like I’m getting more written when I’m on them but I need to maximise my time while doing them as well. But, then that’s true of when I’m on early shifts. I need to work out how to make the most of those days so I can be productive, or is that a target I’m being unrealistic with? Should I just be trying to get a bit of work done and then on my days off have a proper focused day? Or shale I just wing it like I normally do?

Anyway, I need to get cracking for the day.

Have an awesome day, folks!

Good Afternoon, 1st of March 2021

Howdy folks! I hope everyone’s day is going well?

I managed to get 1236 words written this morning, which is more then I was expecting. When I wrote my post this morning the thought of hitting even 500 words felt like a pipe dream, but I got some fluids and a little food into me and fought through the initial feeling of “let me go back to be!!!!!!” and cracked on. I’ve often said, I am the only person holding me back. That is absolutely true, that is something which I am working hard to overcome.

One thing that helped with this mornings words was that I was rewriting a scene that I knew I liked from the original drafts and I like how I’ve rewritten it. I’ll admit, it was originally very judgemental of one character, I suppose to a degree it was very cliched as well. I didn’t want to demonise this character for the lifestyle they had. It’s one that is their choice and although there is an element of scope to judge part of this characters lifestyle, I hope I’ve demonstrated some of the hypocrisy of other characters in the scene. I’m sure when I sent it to my beta readers, and my editor that all three will be more than happy to correct me if I’ve fucked it up!

Right, time to get ready for work! I hope everyone is having a good day!
