I just wanted to write a quick post about mine and Owen’s long-term project (lets call it Phoenix), we’ve not done anything on it for a while 😛 lol This is not through lack of desire to write the novel that we started off with and make it into the story that we’ve always dreamed it would be. It’s been a case that we had this novella on the go which has taken up most of our creative energies (Owen is already working on another story in the same universe). The ideas are still flowing for Phoenix and I can feel characters growing and developing. I have some great little world building details that are slowly beginning to take some shape. I still do not believe that I am ready to write this story. For one thing I am not yet a good enough writer. Another is that I need to do A LOT of research for it.
I have to do a lot of reading of true life experiences do get at least a feel for not only the physical aspects of my characters experiences but also the emotional ones. There’s a saying that someone whose name I forget once said which is “Write what you know” or something along those lines. I took that literally when I first heard it so I struggled with trying to figure out just how I was going to write these images that were in my head, then I realised that I did not need to have gone through a war to be able to write a war scene, but writing about somewhere that i know means that I can put little details of the town etc. that no map would show which will give it a more realistic feel. That leads into me adding that I need to do a lot of location scouting for this novel. Thankfully most of it is either a reasonable drive or train journey away. I need to learn some technical information as well to make it all work properly.
So Phoenix is more than a little way off even being approached for a re-write, but when me and Owen sit down to talk about it I’m sure both of us will have gained enough skill to write this as we want to write it 🙂
Good to hear!
