I’m one of those people who used to be quite easily swayed, especially when it comes to movies. This has brought me to initially dismissing a number of films over the years. One of which that has just popped into my mind is Sucker Punch. This is a film that I never really gave a chance to, I used to think that I didn’t get what it was trying to do and that it was trying to tap into too many different genres. Now though, even though I haven’t seen it in a couple of years I kind of get what the film is trying to say and do and I’m looking forward to seeing it again.
It was the same with Battleship, and although some of the cliches in the film irritate me a little I can truly sit down and enjoy the film for what it’s trying to be. Which is a fun, summer movie. I don’t think it takes itself especially seriously and that comes across well. The beginning of the film alone is incredibly fun.
I’m taking a lot of care when it comes to movies to form my own opinion. It’s easy to hear someone’s opinion and accept that. I’m a big fan of the Hollywood Outsider podcast and I think this show has helped me refine my taste a lot, but I will hold off listening to an episode if they are going to review a movie I haven’t seen yet and one that I am excited about seeing. RoboCop was a good example of this. I held off listening to the episode for about a week till I saw the film myself.
