I was just about to get in the shower as this thought hit me; We’ve lost the battle to save the environment. We lost it a long time ago because we never thought it. Dont worry I’m not going to rabbit on about polar ice caps or anything like that and I will just point out that I know nothing about what’s being done to destroy our planet, well aside from what I read in the tabloids and lets face it, it’s not exactly solid science.
Back to my train of thought though. The reason we have not and will probably never save the environment is that we are not fighting to save it. We are fighting to save ourselves, save humanity. We will not do that, save ourselves. If a meteorite does not hit us then we will blow ourselves up with nuclear weapons, if we don’t do that then we will start to starve ourselves to death which will lead into another world war which will most likely come back to us launching the ‘Nukes’ and we’ll all dead or we’ve been turned into some mutant thing that breathed in the fallout.
Even if we do all that and the ice caps melt and we burn a huge hole in the ozone layer mother earth will still survive. Earth survived the meteorite that is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs. Some form of life will survive, maybe even the odd member of the human species will make it through the end of the world. Life will go on. I do not begin to think that the ancient predators like Sharks and Crocodiles will let man’s little wars bother them. Yeah maybe they wont like the side effects of a nuclear winter of chemical weapons infecting their territories but who’s to say that they wont survive? How about the creatures in the most remote jungles and deserts? or at the bottom of the oceans? Mother earth WILL SURVIVE, It’s mankind that we have to worry about. The earth will find a way of recovering through time. Mankind are a resilient species and despite some of what I have just written I think that we will make it through for a long time yet, but it wont be easy. Despite our population mankind should start worrying about how we are going to save ourselves, because the earth can look after itself.
