I’ve been watching this a lot lately. It is one of my comfort movies and an all-time favourite.
I’ve seen it numerous times before, but I’d never watched it with subtitles. (I do this a lot when watching movies late at night). Even though I feel I have a good knowledge of the movie but seeing the words come up kinda hit home deeper. It makes the dialogue heavy scenes hit home with the narrative. The philosophy and what the world we have built around is, in all truth, a fragile world.
There’s a bleakness which you feel from just the score, the colour palette. It feels like someone’s drained all but ten percent of the colour from it, then put a soft green lens over it all. With the occasional flash of colour that feels like a gut punch as it stands out so much.
So much of this is missed because of the action, but so much of that seeps into the subconscious of the viewer. I’m one of those, I didn’t understand a fraction of the themes of these movies. The most arts of it that I noticed when I first watched it are still there, but because I’m used to them I see elements I have seen before. The depth of thought that went into building this world is breathtaking. The Wachowski’s crafter this world with such a delicate hand that so much gets missed.
I think I could watch this movie a thousand more times and each time something else with show itself.
