Changing My Routines A Little

I think that I’m going to try to adjust some of my routines a little.  Last night I came home and pretty much tried to start writing straight away, which didn’t work.  I’ve never had an evening where I’ve struggled to get the words on the screen as much as I did last night.  Bearing in mind I’ve got the basics of the story in front of me nothing would come out of my head.  So what I’m going to do is not dive straight into writing as soon as I get home.  I’m going to take a little time to just chill out before I get cracking.  It’s not worth sitting looking at my computer screen for an hour before really getting going.  I can relax a little before doing this instead, maybe that’s where I’ve been going wrong.  Every target that I’ve set myself this year I have not hit, I need to look at why I’m not hitting my goals here because it winds me up that I can’t achieve a target that I set myself.  Maybe those targets are unrealistic and I need to appreciate what I am capable of.  No matter what though I need to make time to relax a little each night,  I don’t intend to burn out.

  1. Just relax and don’t overthink it… another writing friend of mine, when she gets stuck, reads a few pages of a book or watches mindless TV for a few minutes, something to calm you down… sometimes when I put the gaming system on it over-stimulates me and I can’t then calm down enough to write, so I haven’t put the PS3 on in months except to watch a movie…

But you’ll get there, you just need to tweak that routine until it works for you… Good luck!

  2. Thanks Armand. I dont find that the Xbox does that but I only play it once in a blue moon and the only reason I’ve been playing it lately is taht I’ve a new game to play. I do what youur friend does, I often just chill out for ten minutes and I too find that refreshing 🙂

I think that a little more sleep is a good place to start.

  3. Maybe your goals are too high at times, but you know what? What’s the point of setting goals if you easily hit all of them? They’re supposed to challenge you, and the important thing is that you keep setting them and you keep working your way through your novel. And I think it’s a good idea to take time to relax, and take the pressure off. Loosen up before you write! 🙂
