R.I.P Tony Scott

The world has lost one of its great creative geniuses, Tony Scott gave us epic films such as Top Gun, Crimson Tide, True Romance, Man On Fire and many more. I will not go into the rumours surrounding his apparent suicide but instead quickly talk about what he gave us. I know little of his private life aside from him and Ridley Scott being brothers. His movies though are a great gift to us and although he never won an oscar which I think he deserved for Crimson Tide alone he made movies that people wanted to watch. I remember seeing Top Gun for the first time and being gutted as Goose died. Crimson Tide confused me the first time that I watched it but I will use the excuse of being young. Once I had watched it a couple of more times I got it and began to appreciate the story that was being told. The conflict that Scott created on that submarine was seductive as it always drew me in if I was flicking the channels and it was on. A mention is needed for True Romance as well. This film had an amazing ensemble cast that Scott crafted together to present one of the best, albeit extreme, love stories that I have encountered. For me though the film that is my favourite of Tony Scott’s is Man On Fire. This is Scott at his best. He teams up with Denzil Washington, whom he worked with many times, to make a kick ass action film that had a heart to it. It’s a film which has an ending that pulls at our emotions which is what a true story teller does best.

Scott’s films have had a lasting influence on me which I did not realise that until today. Not only will he live on in his loved ones but also us movie fans who have been entertained by his work. He will live on in those that have taken inspiration from his work as well. I know I will be digging out the films of his that are in my collection and make time to watch them in the next few days.

Mr. Tony Scott, I thank you for what you gave the world. My thoughts go out to your friends and family. Rest in peace.

  1. Strange story this one isn’t it? It just doesn’t seem to fit together for me.

I think “Man on fire” or “True romance” might be my favourites, although I did like “Unstoppable” from his recent work.

    • It is a strange one. There’s a few rumours going round but I think that’s expected when it’s sudden like this.

I haven’t seen Unstoppable yet but I’m going to grab a copy now.
