Story Growth

I got to work this morning, wrote a blog post and then went in, sat in the staff room with all the intention to write a little on my Mars story, but I had a snippet of a scene pop into my head for my story, Lovers. Five hundred words later I started work. As the day has gone past this story has been on my mind. Not so much the story itself, but the way it’s evolved since this story first popped into my head. That was a good, fifteen years ago. It was just a scene, not even that. It was a snippet of a scene, an image in my mind of a moment of awkwardness between two people. It’s been a somewhat decent evolution in some ways from that moment but I’ve never quite got to the point where I had enough to get the story off the ground. I’ve been torn about the format of it, quite anxious about whether I could make it work or not. It was also quite, I don’t know, not my style I think. Where it is now, the scenes that I’ve got that I need to stitch together, feels more like me.

Do I feel more capable of getting this story written now? Yes, I feel like I have the skills and maturity to get it done, but I don’t think I’m going to be diving into it like I would do another story. This story is coming to me in parts, which is strange because the story isn’t being played out in linear way. It’s going to be a sort of time jumps like Slumdog Millionaire, and countless other stories. Which, weirdly seems to be the way the story is coming to me. I’ve got about five thousand words written and its all over the place, and there’s only a couple of scenes so far but I’m beginning to see how some of these scenes will be connected, and it’s exciting, but I’m not going to dive straight in. I’m going to let it come to me when it does and then when I’ve got a decent story set out, then I’m going to start editing it and get the scenes lined up how they fit into the story.

So, I’m just sorta going with the flow, which is even more of a random way then I normally write, but it’s gonna be fun!
