2nd of July 2020

I’m not writing much at the moment. I sat down to write yesterday but I was trying to work on Penal Earth which is more outlining than writing at this moment and I just couldn’t get my head into it.

I need to write at the moment, I’ve not written properly for so long now I’m scared that I’ve lost the knack to just sit and write. I did a little during a break at work on pen and paper, but that was early rewrite for my vampire book. I’m tired of not being able to get this stories done. I’ve got both Penal Earth and Vampire book eating away at me to get them down. I love both universes and am eager to expand beyond what I’ve got at the moment.

There are a lot of things in my life going on at the moment that are priority over writing but I’ve got to make the time to write as I find that it’s always been something that helps me see the world and makes me feel better in myself.

On a different note, I’ve been blogging with WordPress for ten years. Although I have a blogger account I never really blogged there. So pretty much everything I’ve ever blogged is here on WordPress. Blogging has been incredibly rewarding and I’ve met some amazing people through it and made friends, including my best friend.

Time to wrap this post up. I’ve got a few bits and pieces to do today, not sure I’ll get time to write but I’ll see what I can do later on tonight maybe.

Sunday 28th of June 2020

Good morning! Not a lot of of writing recently. Life’s been busy and there’s a lot I’ve been having to work on that’s away from writing. Things that are important and are the priority.

I have still been thinking about the writing though and what I am aiming for over the next few years. Originally I was thinking about focussing on shorter pieces for the year but that’s kind of gone by the wayside. I’ve been looking back at the Penal Earth world and think I can get it how I want it now. So I’ve been plotting it out chapter by chapter, scene by scene. I’ve got more noted about background details and done some more character work. All little things that were missing from the previous draft. I have written a short story set in this universe that was submitted to an anthology but it didn’t make the cut. This popped up a fair few ideas that have helped with filling out the universe and giving me a new feel for it.

One of the big problems I had with previous drafts was getting my main character right. Now I think I have him down. There’s a sequence which includes him that I fear I may have to cut but I’m going to try and keep it in. It’s the one element of the story that I’ve kept in from the earliest of drafts. I really want to keep it, but will cut it if I have to.

I wasn’t expecting to get such a kick of joy as I did when I saw my name on the screen as my story was playing.

In other news, another anthology I’ve been published in has now come out as an audiobook. Elements Of Horror Book Two: Air is now live on Audible and I’ve got to say, it’s pretty well done. I’d not got around to reading this one yet and I’ve got to admit I’m impressed with the stories included. It makes me a little more prouder than I already was that my story is in there because its in good company. The narrator, Michael Brusasco did an amazing job. He really managed to get the main character of my story spot on. I don’t think I could have wished for a better portrayal of it.

I’m going to wrap this post here. I know it says good morning and I’m posting it past midday but I started writing it this morning, so I’m sticking to it.

Have a good one, folks!

Good Morning, Sunday March 15th 2020

Good Morning, folks! This will be a slightly different post to what I normally put up simply because it’s not going to have much about writing in it.

We’re in a state of uncertainty at the moment with the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. Now, I’ve not been directly affected by it. Aside from some silly memes on social media and a few conversations I’ve not been affected by it. I have loved ones who fall into the high risk category and this concerns me. What happens if we have to go on a lockdown also worries me. There are few people I know who don’t live pay packet to pay packet. What happens to our finances if that happens?

I look at what’s going to happen to the emergency services, which in the UK is already a part of government that is understaffed and overworked. They’ll be pushed even harder and for much longer.

What happens to getting food to people? Will a lockdown allow people to leave to shop? Will the shops have to have police or even military presence to make sure things stay under control. Are they contingencies to ration? (like seriously people, the first sign of an emergency situation and we start hoarding? we did a shop the other day and just did a normal shop and I know other people are doing the same. We don’t need to panic buy, just be sensible) Sorry, I’ll try not to rant any more this post.

It is something that I feel like we as individuals needs to start thinking about. Both rationing of things like food and of money. I don’t need to go out and spend anything today. All I’ll be doing is using a little fuel from my car and thats about it. That said, it could all be over in a few weeks. We might not have to go on lockdown, but I’d like to be hearing from governments what’s going to happen if we have to, and I’d like to hear more about how they’re going to make sure we as a society don’t fall apart in the meantime.

Lots of food for thought at the moment, on the plus side I am getting a few words down and this story I’ve been working on this year is nearing completion of the first draft.

I’ve just finished The First Cut by Chuck Buda. If you like your horror with blood and sex then I’d recommend looking this one up 🙂

I’ll end this post with yes, it says good morning but I posted in the afternoon. And that I’m not an expert with anything I’ve said today. These were just some thoughts that I’ve been having the last few days.

Saturday 15th of February 2020

Good evening, folks! Let’s get straight into it shall we? This month I’ve written 4824 words. I need to step up to try and get to my 500 words a day average but I’ve lost a little writing time each day so I need to compensate and find time to make that up.

The story I’m working on started out as a short story that was about something totally different to where it’s gone, but there are times we have to flow with the story. It makes me think of some TV episodes. The Simpsons especially. They’d start off with an episode where Bart gets obsessed with a yoyo and events lead to Mrs Krabappel confiscates it and gives Bart detention (by the way, I had a school assembly where people came in with Yoyo’s to impress and take our cash when I was at school in the 80’s). This leads to Bart sneaking into Mrs Krabappel’s desk to retrieve the yoyo and he finds a dating column that his teacher had posted. Futurama did this a lot as well. But it’s what I’ve ended up doing with this story in a way. The only difference is I started off with the intention to tell one story but didn’t even get into the meat of that one before I went off in a totally different direction. It’s a direction I’m really happy with and can see things slowly coming together.

It also started off as a short story and is now over 16k words. I’m not sure where it’s going to top out at but as usual, my gut is saying it’ll be about 30k.

Again, tomorrow I’m going to try and write a thousand words. I’m tempted to start working on another story as when I’m jumping to and throw between pieces I seem to get more done, but we’ll see.

My self pimping for today is for the Under The Weather anthology from Burdizzo Books and Back Road Books. This is one of my favourite stories I’ve written. I just let myself go and had a lot of fun with it. The story, The Snow, is about a man who goes to collect his wife from work in a shopping centre as a vicious snow storm hits. When they go to leave things begin to go very wrong.

There are a lot of other amazing stories in this collection to, including one that still freaks me out to this day (try to guess which!), and I’d be super grateful for anyone checking it out. Here’s the link. It’s also the first of my work that’s been made into audio which thrilled me big time.

A Slow Start To February

We’re eight days into the month now and I’ve not written many words this month. Mainly this is due to restriction on my writing time but also I’ve had plenty of things going on outside of writing at the moment that is taking up time.

I’m waiting on hearing back on a short story I submitted last month while also waiting on getting beta notes back on a short story for an anthology I was invited to submit to.

Something I’m finding at the moment is I’m having some damn good ideas for long-term projects. A few little pieces are slotting into place and when I come back to them I think I’m going to have a lot of fun, as well as the words flowing nicely.

Tomorrow I’m going to make time to write around a few things I’ve got to do, I’d love a 1000 word day.

A picture of me at the book launch of 84 Stories 84 Words. This collection of micro stories is work that myself and members of a writing group I was a part of (as well as a few contributions from non-members). This was a lot of fun working on these eighty-four word stories and the launch party was a roaring success! You can check it out on Amazon here.

January 2020

Evening folks! I just wanted to pop in and write a quick post to let you fine folks know what I got done in January.

I wrote 9011 words, which is almost 6500 words under my target (to be fair I had a whole week off from writing which didn’t help). I have lost a little writing time and I did edits on two short stories in January, one of which has been submitted for an anthology. The other is for a super-secret invite only anthology and is with beta readers as I type this.

My writing time is limited at the moment, but I’m cracking out words as and when I can. I think my target of 500 words a day is achievable. It is just on me to focus and make the most of the time I’m given.

I am also now on. Its a site where fans can buy people like myself a ‘coffee’. I do find it hard asking for contributions to help me fund my art, but friends have recommended this site and if it helps me reach my goals then it’s going to be worth it. I’m not going to throw it down your throats. I’m going to mention it here and I share it on social media a few times a week. If you do like my work or even just enjoy reading my blog and would like to contribute a little then please clicky the link.

Right, I’m going to leave it there for the night, folks. I hope everyone has had a good weekend and a good week ahead!

18th of January 2020

Good afternoon folks! I’ve just done my final edit pass of a short story and sent it off to beta readers. I’m hoping to have it submitted within a week of them returning it to me.

I’ve got another one tomorrow that I’m going to try and get done as well. Then next week it’s back to the day job.

I’m sure you’ve noticed I’ve shared a few posts linking to podcasts today, and in the past. These are all podcasts from The Project Entertainment Network. I listen to the ones I share and am a big believer in the network. They’re creating good content and when I’m enjoying something I’ll do my best to spread the word. The same goes for the other post I’ve Re-blogged today from my friends CL Raven. They are two of the finest human beings on the planet. I’m so glad I met them and they’ve become friends and it makes me happy seeing them doing well.

I’m going to leave it there. It did feel good getting some work done this afternoon. Next week I’ll be getting back into the story I’ve been working on. It’s meant to be a short story but I’m not sure how long it’s going to stay in that category.

Here’s the cover of the third anthology I was published in, Under The Weather. You can buy it in paperback, kindle and audio. There’s some great names in this anthology and its well worth checking out!

13th November 2019

Today I’ve written 813 words for a total of 7318 words for the month. I know I should be at about 21000 but I’m not. I’ve had a lot going on this month away from writing but hopefully from here on out I can get back on track, well I can get back into writing regularly again.

I am still working on the short stories for my NaNoWriMo this year. Pretty much doing the same thing as I did last year which worked well for me. I think I’d have had similar success this year but just so much has been going on having the time has been challenging. I’ve not been hooked on one yet. I still feel like I’m finding my rhythm, but that said the one I’ve been focused on the last few days seems to be showing potential.

I am all at sea a little at the moment. I’m going to have realign myself a little over the next few days so I can get back on track properly.
