Although I’ve been writing for almost a decade now it’s only been in the last couple of years that I’ve began to get serious about this dream I have and about that time I was getting worries that I would one day run out of ideas. This was something that used to really worry me but then I realised that it’s not something I need to worry about because I will never stop having ideas and being inspired by the world around me. This week alone I’ve written ten, maybe twelve little notes in note books about something I’ll like to look at in more detail at a later date. Some of these little ideas won’t leave me alone, slowly they begin to dominate my thoughts and more ideas grow and before I know it I have a few pages of notes for this one idea.
The secret is WRITE THE IDEAS DOWN. It’s as simple as that. If I have an idea at work I have a little notepad in my pocket and a pen and I’ll write it down quickly. Normally it’s only a few words, sometimes it can be half a page or even just the title of a story. If I’m not at work I write a note down on my phone on my calendar and then write it down in an A4 pad later on. Both ways result in the idea being on paper.
One thing that I no longer do is try to make an idea into a story as soon as I have the idea. This has worked for me in the past but as I’m trying to write longer pieces at the moment (30k words and over) it doesn’t seem to be working for me as well as it used to. The stories I’m writing now though are a lot more complicated and need a little more research and thought.
