A Couple Of Goals For The Year

I am sure that these goals will change and evolve as the year passes but these are generally what I want to achieve.

  • Get a short story published
  • Have a first draft of a novel completed
  • Self publish a novella
  • Find an illustrator who I can work with
  • Write 100,ooo words

Now I know these may not seem that grand but at the moment for me they seem more than realistic.  I have about a dozen short stories but most of those are within one universe which I’m not sure where I want to take it just yet.

I think I can get the Novel draft done, I’m planning on using either my NaNo project or a story I have been working on for a while so I have a good foundation to build from.

The Novella is a joint project with Owen that I think will work well.  the story we’re working on is not large enough to build into a novel and not many publishers seem to like novella size works.

finding an illustrator is that is not really vital but I’d like to have some great cover art for what I do, especially if I self publish anything., and I’d like to put some pictures to my short story series.

The Hundred thousand words.  I should easily be able to hit that target with short stories and the novel.  I wont be counting blog posts in that target though.  I did last year but this year I want to separate the two.

    • That’s wicked 🙂 Motivation is what I struggle with at times. This month, apart from a few blog posts, i’ve barely written anything this month. I have done a fair bit of editing though. I decided to post my goals here so when I look back at the end of the year I’ve got something that I can look at and slap myself on the back if i suceed, or around the face if i dont! lol

  1. Some awesome goals here! And I agree, so much of goal setting is about being realistic and setting manageable (although measureable) goals.
Great blog here by the way! Good luck with all the writing, getting published and finding an illustrator! 🙂

  2. Goals, now that is what I’m missing in my routine. I guess being new at writing (for now as a hobby) I have a lot to learn. One question for you though. Do you find that daily/weekly/monthly word goals hinder your writing? I can see it as a good idea as for something to shot for but can it force a story to go somewhere you might not want it to go because you are not taking the time to just let it happen?

    • I think it can if you get obsesessed by hitting that target. Last year I had a 1000 word a week target that I found I hit quite easily so I decided to push myself this year. I’ve learnt not to force myself to when I’m not in the mood, I used to do that and found that I would delete what I had written because it just did not work.
Something that helped me last year was doing NaNoWriMo in November. It taught me to just write and edit afterwards.
Thank you for taking the time to check out my blog 🙂
