Proper Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance

Proper Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance

I heard this little saying a few years ago but I forget the origin of the reference ( I think it’s a military one) but it has always stuck with me, even if I rarely use it.  Being prepared for anything that we do is often more helpful than not, but when it comes to writing I’ve found that having done the research it makes it much easier.  As I have mentioned before here I am useless at research, I really do struggle with the process of sitting down and searching out the information that I need.  It does help though.  For my NaNoWriMo project I set it in an area that I know quite well so when I was writing it I did not feel like I was writing blind and it came out so much easier.  I know location alone does not make a story but writing about where I know was a big help with my NaNo project and I’m looking forward to getting back into that one in the summer. Before I can start on it again I need to scout out some places that I do not know quite as well and I need to find some online information as well which will add depth to the story, but generally I wont need to do too much for that story. It is a mostly character driven story so I’ll need to tap into my personal experiences to get the emotion into the main characters.

As for my daily target, it was hit, although I would have liked to have gotten a few more words down.  With what I rolled over from last month I’m about halfway to this months 20k word target, which will be about a third of the project that I am working on now.  So this month I’m on target so far 🙂

  1. I’m not good at research too! It’s usefull but it can be boring… Sometimes I decide to write about fictional towns only to be free from research!

    • That can work, but I’ve found that if you can visit places that you are writing about then it does make it easier, but that can be difficult. For me researching is something that I need to get better at because it makes a story much easier to write if I know the little details 🙂
