Why I’m Not Making Any Grand Declarations For 2014

It feels like the last couple of year I’ve thrown out a blog post each year declaring that I am going to do this, this and that by the end of the year. I’m fed up of doing that because it always makes me feel like a total muppet because my writing was or is not ready yet. With each piece of feedback I get from a Beta reader I’m reminded that my writing is not ready yet. I’m confident (desperately hopeful) that my writing is close to being ready to sale. I don’t want to have my writing out there when I’m not entirely happy with it.

There are a few things that I am changing with my process for working on writing this new year but I’m not going to go into the details of what I’m doing because I’m still trying to find the best way to get the most out of the time I have available to write.

My main priority for the new year is not getting something publish (traditional or self-published) but in getting myself more focused on using my time to get what I’m writing right. Research is still an area I need to improve on, but I think because I write the way I do research will be done after a first draft is finished and I can see what exactly I need to find out.

The most important thing is to get my butt in a chair and get working. That’s all there is too it. There is no reason aside from my own lack of discipline that is going to stop me from getting home each night, sitting my arse in the chair at my desk and getting to work.

  1. Just a comment about the research. If you just want to get the story out, write it and highlight (with a marker if you write longhand or using the Word tool if you type) the areas you know you need to look into as you go along. This way, when you go to polish the draft when it’s done, you can concentrate on other things, writerly things, and leave the research until you’re ready to deal with it. For example, when I wrote Blood in the Past, I highlighted a lot of the areas having to do with Brighthouse’s brain trauma, and waited until I spoke to my medical sources to fill that in later because I know I can get lost in doing research and lose my writing momentum. Hope that makes sense. 🙂
