How Sci-Fi Films Have Influenced Me : Vampire Movies

I’ve got a vampire short story series, and I think I’ve not really seen anything like it in the movies.  There are some good vampire movies out there, Daybreakers being the most recent one that really impresses me.  I also enjoyed Priest.  There are also the Blade and Underworld films that I thoroughly enjoy watching.  I’ve seen one of the Twilight films, it wasnt bad but it didn’t blow me away.  It felt like it was set up just to make young women swoon over the tortured soul of Edward, or drool over the werewolf.  And don’t get me started on sparkling vampires!

I don’t want to go anywhere near that sort of thing with what I am writing.  When dealing with the whole vampire myth so much has been done before that its easy to just write the same thing, just a little different.  Maybe that’s what people will think of my vampire stories, maybe mine aren’t all that original but hell, I wont know until more people have read them.  On the flip side of tormented vegetarian vampires you have the hard-core blood bath vampire films where vampires are sliced and diced and turned to ash etc, etc.  I havent written anything where it is just one huge fight (yet).  I have written scenes with guns and bullets and fight scenes and some pretty abusive things in these stories though.

Any writer wants their work to be new, never been done before.  That’s hard though and with the love affair that the world has with the western interpretation of vampires.  I’m sure that when I mention that I write about vampires people assume that I’ve written something like Twilight or Blade because they, along with Underworld, are how we see vampires in today’s world.  That’s how Vampire Movies have influenced me, I don’t want any of my fiction to be like anything else out there, but with my vampire stuff it has a lot of me in it and I hope it has its own unique identity.
