Good evening folks!

I’ve had a fantastic weekend with my daughter, so I’ve not done a lot of writing. But I did manage a few words last night, passing the 20k mark on this story.

This evening I wasn’t really feeling it, so I games for a bit after I got home after dropping my little one off. I gamed longer then I was planning and didn’t leave myself with much time to write. So I decided to just try and knock out a few words and I knocked out almost 1100 words.

I’d love to say something dramatic of click baity like ‘I don’t know how I did it, but I wrote a 1000 words in about an hour’, but it’s not a mystery. It’s having been a writer for around twenty years, serious about it the last seven years or so.

Tonight I looked at my story, couldn’t see what to do with the scene I was working on so decided to to jump ahead and start a scene that I’m going to be cannibalising from an earlier draft. I’d guess about 250-300 words cover parts from the earlier draft, but that quickly grew into entirely new story; character development, and world building, as well as moving the plot forward.

Something I remember hearing in The Dead Robots Society podcast was that Paul E. Cooley was at the time aiming for a simple 250 words per day. It’s a relatively easy target to hit but he found quite often he’d surpass that as he’d get rolling with the story. It’s a piece of advance that has really helped me and I’d recommend it to anyone. That’s what happened to me tonight, I was just gonna get a few words written, but I got on a roll.
